Tales from the Combe
Christopher Jelley
WESTCOTT
FIRE WALK

The labyrinth was drawn and cut early 2013 as part of the Artist's walks at Westcott farm, Brompton Ralph, Somerset. The path is a simple coiled walk with only one way to the heart, so there is no 'solving' as you can in a maze. It is a path of contemplation, where you try and focus on a single concept throughout your simple journey, in fact it is thought that Nordic fishermen would often walk these hill top labyrinths to appease the gods before setting sail to the fishing grounds.
The first public opening of Christopher's labyrinth was for Somerset Art Week 2013 where the farm was host to ten diverse artists with a range of work for sale all based around their walks and interaction with Westcott Farm.
The location of the labyrinth is on a steep valley side, with the adjacent valley giving good viewing potential and it was with this in mind that the concept of a night time photography session came about. With a steady mounted camera capable of long exposure length (5 minutes for image top) it was possible to capture the path as walkers traversed the length with torches.
Then the idea to have lots and lots of candles and inviting people to walk the path all together was a natural step forward, it would mean that everyone would become part of the art as we would 'paint with light and movement'.
Picture right were taken by the talented Reuben Jelley, without who's help (and endurance against the weather!) we would have had no images at all.
